But it was not until he attended a workshop given by Harry Smith that he realized his dream. Harry Smith was a Filipino writer who had traveled to Japan to learn about Japanese culture and society from the locals. He also created a workshop called "Storytelling for Young Adults" where children could practice storytelling and get feedback from adults.

In that workshop, Kousei met Harry Smith who became his mentor and friend. With Harry's help, Kousei wrote his first story, "The Blue Bird," which won a gold medal at the International Children's Writing Contest in Nagoya, Japan in 2009. "The Blue Bird" is Kousei's debut book published in 2010.

He continues to write stories and hopes one day he will have enough money to leave Japan for good so he can travel the world writing about it.
